Graduating seniors Melissa Ciment and Emily Creveling first walked on campus at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania with a desire to get involved.

“Being a part of ESU’s campus and working with so many students has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my life,” Creveling said.

A passion for serving students and a dedication to the university earned Creveling the University Leadership Award at the spring commencement exercises on Saturday, May 7.

The University Leadership Award is presented to the graduating senior who has demonstrated leadership in student officer positions and in other extra-curricular activities.

Like Creveling, Ciment wanted to make an impact at ESU. She received the University Service Award at the commencement ceremony. The University Service Award is presented to an outstanding graduating senior who has demonstrated exceptional service to the university through on-campus extra-curricular activities.

“The most important thing to me has always been the voice of the students,” she said.

The University Leadership Award and the University Service Award are the highest non-academic honors a senior can receive. To be eligible for either award, a student must have attended the university for at least two years and have a cumulative grade point average of 2.60 or above.

Both award recipients were immersed in student life during their time on campus.

Creveling, a hotel, restaurant and tourism management major from Bloomsburg, Pa., was quick to join the Campus Activities Board, serving as special events chair. In her time at ESU, Creveling was also heavily involved with the university’s chapter of Colleges against Cancer. She served as president of the organization, and concluded her involvement her senior year as relay for life chair, where she led an effort that raised more than $24,000 for the American Cancer Society— a record breaking total. She was also a member of the Hotel, Restaurant Club, the Voices of Triumph Gospel Choir, and served on the university’s homecoming committee.

“These past four years at ESU have made me who I am today,” she said. “I have had incredible opportunities and I will never regret my decision in choosing to become a Warrior.”

Ciment, a speech-language pathology and communication studies major from Southampton, Pa., played a large role on the university’s Student Senate. She served as a senator, special events chair, and secretary in her tenure with the organization. Ciment was also involved with the Campus Activities Board, where she served as the president in her senior year. She was ESU’s first student co-chair of the Homecoming Committee, leading efforts to organize the university’s homecoming week activities, which raised over $5,000 for charities and brought hundreds of alumni back to campus.

“Being a student leader changed my life,” Ciment said. “I am so grateful to have attended ESU.”

ESU awarded a record 1,166 degrees at separate commencement exercises for undergraduate and graduate students on May 6 and 7.

East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Sociology, Social Work and Criminal Justice has taken steps to enable licensed professionals to complete the 30 hours of continuing education required every two years to renew their licenses by the Pennsylvania Board of Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists and Professional Counselors.

“For many years licensed social workers, marriage and family therapists and professional counselors in our community have often needed to travel to the Lehigh Valley or the Scranton-Wilkes Barre area in order to complete the majority of their continuing education training, and now they can complete their hours here at ESU,” said John Kraybill-Greggo, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of sociology, social work and criminal justice.

Most recently, ESU joined forces with the Marywood University School of Social Work on Wednesday, April 6, to sponsor the Third Annual Spring Continuing Education Workshop. This annual co-sponsored workshop is planned by Dr. Kraybill-Greggo and Lloyd Lyter, Ph.D., Coordinator of the Marywood MSW Pocono Program at ESU. This year’s workshop, titled Being Fully Present: Mindfulness Practices for Social Workers, was facilitated by Christine Kessen, Ph.D., Marywood associate professor of social work and Ricardo Horn also from Marywood.

More than 80 people attended the workshop including ESU’s Bachelor of Science in social work (BSSW) program agency field supervisors, Marywood’s Master of Social Work (MSW) program field supervisors, both BSSW and MSW field students and regional community agency practitioners. Attendance at the workshop earned three continuing education units (CEUs) for licensed social workers, marriage and family therapists and professional counselors.

Prior to the spring workshop, the ESU Department of Sociology, Social Work and Criminal Justice sponsored the inaugural Dr. Barbra G. Collins Fall Social Work Professional Development Day in November 2015. The event was named in honor of Barbara Collins, Ph.D., ESU professor emerita, for her 36 years of service to the university, community and social work profession.

The theme of the inaugural professional development day was Social Work Interventions with Alzheimer’s. The program agenda included a keynote address by Dan Cohen, MSW, Executive Director of Music & Memory, along with a viewing of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award Winning Documentary Alive Inside, highlighting Mr. Cohen’s work. The afternoon included three one-hour workshops facilitated by ESU BSSW Program Faculty and Advisory Committee members focused on responding to Alzheimer’s: (1) Ethical and Legal Considerations by Hanif Bey, MSW; (2) Strategies for Navigating Resources by Joanne Storer, MSW, LCSW; and (3) Self-Care Strategies by Lynn Steele, MSW, LSW. Jeffrey Dauber from the Alzheimer’s Association also provided a resource table for attendees. The professional development day was moderated by Dr. Kraybill-Greggo and attendees earned six CEUs for licensed social workers, marriage & family therapists and professional counselors.

The Department of Sociology, Social Work and Criminal Justice also serves as host to an annual Continuing Education six-hour “mini-marathon” offered at ESU by the Eastern Division of the PA Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. Recently, attendees earned six CEUs on March 5 by completing three continuing education workshops held on campus.

For more information about the Second Annual Dr. Barbara G. Collins Fall Professional Development Day to be held on Monday, November 21, 2016 or other continuing education workshop offerings, contact Dr. Kraybill-Greggo at 570-422-3844 or jkgreggo@esu.edu.

ESU Faculty and Students Combine Nursing with Community Outreach

North-Pocono-High-School-Health-Fair

Lori Pierangeli, Ph.D., associate professor of nursing at East Stroudsburg University, along with senior community health nursing students and members of the nursing faculty, engaged in a variety of events to teach and learn the values of service and community health throughout the spring semester.

Through careful planning, Dr. Pierangeli utilized these events to emphasize goals and initiatives not seen in the classroom. “Students realize how much nursing has to offer the public, which then energizes students to continue volunteer opportunities after graduation,” she said.

Dr. Pierangeli and her group spoke at several events to discuss the effects of an unhealthy lifestyle, and provided tips and ideas on healthier living. At the first event in January, students worked with Crossroads Community Services by engaging in their National “Point in Time” count of the homeless in Monroe County, Pennsylvania.

The count is a federally mandated activity that determines funding for services to the county to assist vulnerable populations each year. Crossroads Community Services provides supportive housing programs to people with serious and persistent mental illnesses as well as those experiencing homelessness in the area.

In April, the nursing students created interactive health education exhibits to demonstrate a variety of health promotion topics at North Pocono School District in Daleville, Pa. and participated in the Monroe County Health Fair, which was held at Stroudsburg High School and sponsored by State Representative Rosemary Brown. These were both public events.

The group also offered three sessions of “Lunch and Learn” at Martin Guitar in Nazareth, Pa., offering discussions on hypertension and nutrition and the importance of blood pressure screening. This event was recorded by the company for future use for employees on alternate work shifts.

Dr. Pierangeli spoke highly of these events and their impact on the nursing department. Participation in these events provided students with “the opportunity to integrate theory into practice.” She also received positive feedback about the interactive style from her students. “Students comment on how they never realized how many agencies exist within the community to assist those in need,” said Dr. Pierangeli.

These opportunities allowed students to meet with many ESU alumni who graduated with degrees in education and nursing, including former mayor of Scranton, Pa., Jimmy Connors. Alumni were invited to join in on the discussions.

Dr. Pierangeli said that “students learned the value of engagement within the community.”

ESU Announces Plans to Drop SAT, ACT Scores from Admissions Process

The Office of Admissions in conjunction with the Office of Academic Affairs at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) is introducing a pilot approach to student recruitment for spring 2017; it’s eliminating the mandatory submission of SAT and ACT scores, a long-standing requirement of the admissions process. ESU will be the first university within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education to introduce test-optional admissions for all applicants, which launches ESU into an elite group of more than 850 educational institutions nationwide including many colleges and universities that are now test optional, such as Temple University, Bryn Mawr College, Duquesne University, Franklin and Marshall College, Juniata College and Saint Joseph’s University.

The decision to join the ranks of test optional universities was taken in concert with Academic Affairs, directed by Provost Joanne Bruno, J.D. The primary use of the scores has been for placement in freshman English, mathematics classes, and science placements rather than in the selection process. Discussions on replacing test scores by other means allowed the conversation to focus on the role test scores play in reducing access to otherwise talented and qualified prospective students.

Nationally, standardized test scores have repeatedly been cited as barriers that have prevented worthy candidates from applying to colleges and universities.

“We’ve examined best practices and results from a number of institutions prior to our decision to run a test-optional pilot for ESU,” said David Bousquet, vice president for enrollment management. “There is evidence that standardized tests are not the best predictor of college success. Rather, the level of courses selected and the grades received in those college preparatory courses continue to stand as the best predictor of college success.”

“There appears to be campus-wide consensus to give this pilot test-optional initiative a try and then to assess the results,” said Peter Hawkes, Ph.D., dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “ESU’s Council of Trustees is also very supportive of this trial and hopes that the pilot offers increased access to education for those seeking such opportunities.”

Increasingly many colleges and universities are moving away from requiring standardized test results as a part of the admissions process. In a 2015 article in Maine’s Morning Sentinel, it was reported that The College Board, the not-for-profit organization that administers the SAT, reported the number of non-profit, four-year colleges in the U.S. that require or recommend standardized test scores has declined from 82 percent in 2003 to 78 percent in 2013.

“There are students who do not fare well on these on standardized tests but present a record of solid grades. By removing the stigma of poor standard test results, we hope to remove a barrier for students who don’t think their SAT or ACT scores are accurate indicators of their academic ability,” Bousquet said.  “Students will still have an option to submit their SAT and ACT scores if they choose.”

“We are looking forward to this pilot program,” said Jeff Jones, director of admissions. “Removing an emphasis on standardized test scores from the admission process will enable us to place greater emphasis on grades, curriculum, extracurricular activities, community service and attendance.”

Bousquet added that the test-optional pilot may widen the 2017 applicant pool and encourage students who might otherwise shy away from East Stroudsburg University to give the university a more serious look. Once the pilot is underway, a review of the academic performance of those who submit and those who elect not to submit test scores will be conducted following the 2017-2018 academic year.

Archeological-Dig

Four years ago, Doug Lare, Ed.D., knew he wanted to get his hands dirty. He came up with an idea to provide middle school students with a chance to participate in archeological digs. He started by working with a social studies teacher at the Allentown Harrison Middle School to get students signed up for the trip. While scouting for possible locations, Dr. Lare came across the Governor Wolf Historical Society. Spending time recruiting a team of faculty members and professional archeologists, Dr. Lare felt ready to take on the project for the third year. On April 30, months of planning paid off as students and professionals spent over six hours digging in the dirt.

“At the end of the day, the students did not want to leave,” he said. “They really love digging in the dirt and trying to find something.”

As a professor of professional and secondary education at East Stroudsburg University, Dr. Lare saw this as an opportunity to reach students outside of the traditional classroom setting. The students were able to see science in action. Their responsibilities included keeping records and digging with archaeologists.

“The idea of digging in the dirt and uncovering something interesting— it’s fascinating,” he said. “You can’t get that connection from reading the book.”

Dr. Lare considers this experience one of the best things he has done in education. For Van Reidhead, Ph.D., professor of sociology at ESU, who joined Dr. Lare on the trip, working with middle school students is a great experience.

“Students at that age are totally engrossed with exploration and discovery,” he said. “I knew I would enjoy the kids.”

Dr. Reidhead has been interested in archaeology for most of his life. He earned a doctoral degree in anthropology, with an emphasis on archeology. “With archeology, I am fascinated by different cultures and change,” he said. Dr. Reidhead shared his stories with the middle school students on the day of the dig.

“It was so exciting to see how enthusiastic they got over every little thing they were able to learn,” he said.

Six ESU students, four professional archaeologists, 26 middle school students and seven faculty members participated in the recent trip.

“After spending so many hours together, those who participated made new connections — we all became friends,” Dr. Lare said.

The long term goal of the project is to find artifacts, clean them up and display them at the Governor Wolf Historical Society. Dr. Lare plans to take this trip with the students twice a year moving forward.

“The students beg to come back,” he said. “The magic that touches these students when they connect to the history they find is the best thing to see as an educator.”

Marcia L. Gasper, Ed.D., associate professor of nursing at East Stroudsburg University, became a certified health care simulation educator on April 25. The certification was awarded by The Society for Simulation in Health Care, a non-profit organization established in 2004 to develop simulation in health care.

This certification, an international recognition, demonstrates quality to consumers and industries. In addition to meeting the standards that had been set through a peer-developed process, Dr. Gasper met the experiential requirements and passed a standardized exam to earn this distinction. To maintain these credentials, she must meet continuing education expectations.

Dr. Gasper’s certification is a reflection of the growing nursing program at East Stroudsburg University. According to Dr. Gasper, this distinction was a step towards integration simulation into the curriculum.

“In a recent curriculum revision, we added four simulation courses to our program,” she said.

She also expressed that her certification will benefit her students and reflect well on the nursing program.

“The certification helps me develop and facilitate high quality simulation learning experiences for our nursing students,” she said. “It helps me to pursue a leadership role in simulation in health care education.”

The nursing department at East Stroudsburg University offers a four-year bachelor’s degree program, which is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing and fully approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. With strong clinical partners such as Pocono Medical Center, the nursing department has developed through the Dedicated Educational Unit, a clinical setting that becomes a teaching and learning experience through the combined efforts of nurses and other health care workers, management, faculty, and students.

English Professor Publishes Novel

A trip to the Houston Zoo over 14 years ago led Bill Broun to publish his first novel. “Night of the Animals,” which will be on sale beginning July 5, follows a homeless man named Cuthbert Handley who, over the course of the night, works to release the animals of the London Zoo.

“The first spark for a tale about a mentally ill old man’s interaction with zoo animals came from a very close friendship with a schizophrenic man whom I once spotted ‘talking’ to a troop of howler monkeys during our visit to the Houston Zoo,” Broun said.

After over a decade of writing and research, Broun’s story is set to hit the shelves this summer. Landing on both the Wall Street Journal’s anticipated books list and the Huffington Post’s summer reading list, the East Stroudsburg University associate professor of English is eager to share his novel with readers.

“It feels super exciting and I am really looking forward to the next step,” he said.

“Night of the Animals” explores the boundaries of reality, the ghosts of love and trauma, and the power of redemption, while vividly capturing the emotional, physical, and spiritual bonds between humans and animals.

Broun admits that writing the novel was challenging at times. Teaching full time at the university, he spent most of his vacations and holiday breaks with his fingers on his keyboard in front of the computer screen.

“I took it very seriously and learned that if you work really hard and focus, you can accomplish just about anything,” he said.

Broun is often inspired by the students in his classes.

“When you see students juggling full-time jobs while pursuing a degree, it’s hard to feel sorry for yourself when they are doing so much work,” he said.

Before his teaching career at ESU, Broun worked as a journalist in both the United Sates and the United Kingdom. In 2002, he was appointed a resident fellow at Yale University.
Broun is grateful to be spending his life with two of his greatest passions: writing and teaching.

“I’ve been encouraged at ESU through this whole process,” he said. “The university is incredibly supportive of me being a writer and a very busy teacher.”

To learn more about the book visit http://billbroun.com. The book is available to be preordered in print, Kindle, or audio book at all booksellers, including the university bookstore. It has been critically acclaimed by the four pre-publication journals. It was called a “tour de force,” by Library Journal. It is an Ecco Books/HarperCollins release.

The psychology department at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania hosted its 39th Biannual Research Forum on April 26 in the Niedbala Auditorium of the Hoeffner Science and Technology Center. The Research Forum was established almost 20 years ago by Sussie Eshun, Ph.D., professor of psychology, and Richard Wesp, Ph.D., distinguished professor of psychology, as a venue to showcase the outstanding student research being done in the psychology department. It has steadily grown and now includes numerous research and internship posters, student research presentations, student award presentations, and honor society inductions.

The Research Forum is the highlight of the semester for both psychology faculty members and students. The spring semester Research Forum included special recognition of Donna Hodge, Ph.D., professor of psychology, who is retiring after 30 years. Both undergraduate psychology majors and faculty members celebrated Dr. Hodge’s dedication to the many students she taught over the past three decades.

The encouragement and recognition of student research are central aspects of the forum. Each semester, selected student researchers give oral presentations discussing their recent empirical research projects. Like presentations at a professional conference, students provide detailed accounts of their hypotheses, research methods, data analysis, and conclusions. The students who presented their research conducted with Irina Khusid, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology, include: Julia Nikolajuk, a sophomore psychology major from East Stroudsburg, Pa.; Erin Rubendall, a junior psychology and sociology major from Collegeville, Pa.; and Tasha Wehrenberg, a senior psychology major from Newton, Pa.

Two awards are presented annually at the spring Research Forum to psychology majors who have demonstrated exceptional service to the department, university and community. The scholarship award given in memory Evelyn and Valerie M. Hodge honors the lives of these two individuals and promotes the principles and ideals they espoused, including compassion and service. Recipients of this award must meet specific academic criteria, which includes maintaining a 3.0 GPA, and demonstrate active participation and service in student organizations such as Psi Chi, The International Honor Society in Psychology, and The Psychology Association. The 2016 recipients of this award were Theresa Gehring, a junior psychology and criminal justice major from Stroudsburg, Pa., and Christina Borghese, a junior psychology major from Middletown, N.J. The John Kramer Service award, given in memory of John Kramer, a 2002 graduate from the ESU psychology program, recognizes a psychology major who demonstrates exemplary service to the university, department, and community, taking into account community volunteer work and participation in student organizations. The 2016 recipients of the John Kramer Service Award were Jacqueline Cassaro from Bethel, N.Y., and Caitlin Trainer from Andreas, Pa., both of whom recently earned the Bachelor of Science in psychology.

As the day’s celebration of student excellence continued, those undergraduate psychology majors who have met rigorous academic achievement, which include maintaining a 3.0 GPA, standards were formally inducted into Psi Chi.

Psi Chi is the largest student psychological organization in the world, having more than 700,000 members. Psi Chi’s mission is to promote excellence in scholarship and to advance the science of psychology. The ESU chapter was founded in 1980 and since that time, hundreds of students have become members. The ESU Chapter of Psi Chi, along with its counterpart, The Psychology Association, a general membership student organization for anyone interested in the study of psychology, sponsors many educational, charitable, and civic programs, which are of value to the professional discipline, as well as to the local community.

Reneé Boburka, Ph.D. and Irina Khusid, Ph.D., both associate professors of psychology, are the faculty advisers for these organizations. During the spring 2016 Research Forum, 21 undergraduate students were inducted into Psi Chi including: Kara Bogucki, a junior from Southampton, Pa.; Kylie Brancato, a sophomore from Saylorsburg, Pa.; Christina Borghese; Lisa-Ann Cerenov, a sophomore psychology and nursing major from Howell, N.J.; Emily Conte, a sophomore from Fair Lawn, N.J.; Cindy Daniels, a sophomore from Stroudsburg, Pa.; Dominika Douckova, a junior psychology and French major from East Stroudsburg, Pa.; Ryan Flannery, a junior from Stroudsburg, Pa.; Peter James Gangemi, a junior from Randolph, N.J.; Carla Garis, a junior from Sandoval, Ill.; Abigail Kaspszyk, a sophomore from Kunkletown, Pa.; Toniann McErlean, a junior from Mount Bethel, Pa.; Julia Nikolajuk; Maggie O’Grady, a junior from New Milford, N.J.; Nicole Parisi, a junior from Stroudsburg, Pa.; Anissa Rago, a sophomore from North Bergen, N.J.; Samantha Reilly, a junior from Doylestown, Pa.; Danielle Santapaola, a junior from Albrightsville, Pa.; Breanna Zafia, a sophomore from Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; and Zeynepa Zaimova, a sophomore from Wind Gap, Pa. Sarah Schaeffer, from Tafton, Pa., who recently earned her Bachelor of Science in psychology, was also inducted.

After the formal student presentations, awards, and inductions, students and faculty members reconvened on the first floor of Stroud Hall to view research posters by students who completed internships or are enrolled in research-oriented psychology courses. The John Kramer Science Award, which recognizes outstanding student research posters .was presented to Emily Conte; Dominika Douckova; Iqra Mahmood, a junior from Hazleton, Pa.; Jesenia Rosario, a junior from Northampton, Pa.; Gina Santini, a junior from Harmony Township, N.J.; and Samantha Valente, a sophomore from Milford, Pa. Their study was titled “Improvement of Memory when Negative Emotion is Related to Content.”

Baseball, Softball Teams Announce Partnership With Stroudsburg Little League And Stroud Township Board of Supervisors To Seek Support To Enhance Facilities

Liittle League Event 06 09 2016 SF 048

East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) Department of Athletics, the ESU Foundation, the Stroudsburg Little League (SLL) Board of Directors and the Stroud Township Board of Supervisors announced today a new partnership and intentions to raise funds and community support in order to enhance and utilize the ESSA & Hughes Field Complex at Creekview Park, 335 Powerhouse Lane, Stroudsburg. The plan calls for the ESU Foundation, in conjunction with ESU’s Department of Athletics, to raise $1.8M to incorporate the installation of artificial turf (full turf for baseball and outfield turf for softball), two sets of bullpen mounds for both the baseball and softball fields, construction of home and away dugouts at both fields, permanent and accessible bleacher seating for fans, designated hitting cages for each field and overhead netting to protect fans from foul balls. The upgrades are necessary in order to meet regulations for NCAA competitions by ESU’s teams and will be an added bonus to Little League participants and their fans. Both ESU and SLL officials hope to have construction completed by August 2017, in time for ESU’s fall 2017 semester, when the baseball and softball programs will be preparing for the spring 2018 season.

“This is such a great opportunity for Stroudsburg Little League,” said Board of Directors President Jerry Robertson. “I’ve been involved in Stroudsburg Little League for more than 24 years and I have to say we feel very fortunate that our local university wants to partner with us to create a facility that is not only state-of-the-art, but a wellspring of mentorship for the young, influential kids involved in our program. Little League participants will be able to see for themselves that there’s a place for teamwork and comradery throughout their youth and into adulthood.”

“ESU is very excited to be working with Stroud Township and the Stroudsburg Little League on this project that benefits both Little League players and the outstanding student-athletes within our Warrior baseball and softball programs. Athletes of all ages deserve a first-class facility in which to play and through this initiative, we can make that happen,” said ESU President Marcia G. Welsh, Ph.D. The rise of ESU’s baseball program to national prominence, and new leadership within the softball program, has given the Warriors momentum, but there is a clear need for facilities upgrades due to drainage, dugout, fencing and seating concerns at their existing facilities. The University’s teams have playing on Mitterling Field (baseball) and Zimbar Field (softball) on campus since the early 1960s and 1975, respectively. Prior to their construction, baseball was played in Eiler-Martin Stadium. Costs to develop new facilities for ESU student-athletes and fans would be exorbitant and finding an ideal locale for new baseball and softball fields within ESU’s current footprint is also prohibitive.

According to officials for both ESU and the Stroudsburg Little League, a plan is in place for shared use of the baseball and softball fields that will accommodate both groups. While a formal schedule has not yet been established, estimated field time for ESU teams at the complex will be from late February through early May. This will allow for pre, regular and post season practices and scheduled or rescheduled home games through the end of each ESU team’s respective regular season schedule. Post season tournament access for ESU games in May remain under discussion.

Stroudsburg Little League and Softball practices generally begin in late March or early April (weather permitting). The shared use plan preserves Stroudsburg Little League field access on days and times when ESU teams are away, not conducting formal practices or have concluded home games and/or practices for the day (such as weekends). Weekday field access for ESU and Little League occurs at different times of day, thereby complementing each other. Little League access occurs no sooner than late afternoon when most ESU games or practices conclude. Stroudsburg Little League preserves exclusive access under its long term lease with Stroud Township for the balance of its spring and summer schedule.

ESU and Stroudsburg Little League coaches will work together to expand this partnership during the fall semester to avoid any conflict with Little League baseball and softball “fall ball” programs while ensuring ESU teams have sufficient practice time at the complex.

“The potential of this partnership is just another example of the university’s commitment to creating a best-in-class experience for our student-athletes while strengthening the institution’s bond with the local community,” said Josh Looney, ESU director of athletics. “This project will expand the university’s brand into the local community and immediately raise the level of our teams’ ability to recruit in the increasingly competitive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and the Atlantic Region of NCAA Division II. But first things first – we need to find ways to raise funds for these enhancements in order to make all of these plans a reality.” Those interested in more information about this philanthropic initiative may contact Richard Santoro, executive director of the ESU Foundation, at rsantoro@esufoundation.org or call (570) 422-3333. For more information about ESU’s baseball and/or softball program, contact Greg Knowlden, ESU sports information director at gknowlden@esu.edu or (570) 422-3312, or for information about the Stroudsburg Little League program, visit http://www.sburgll.com/fields.html.

Burgy-Retirement

After eight years of service to East Stroudsburg University as the Number One Fan of Warrior Athletics, Burgy has announced his official retirement effective Friday, June 10.

Burgy’s arrival was celebrated by the ESU campus community during Homecoming in October, 2008, and his mission was to: continue the rich traditions of the university through good will among all, support community service for others, and inspire a winning season year after year.

He’s opting to leave his den beneath Eiler Martin Stadium to join members of the bear family in the natural habitat near Fairbanks, Alaska.

When asked what he’ll miss most, Burgy’s response was ESU students, the Warrior Fight Song, guest appearances both on and off campus and food from ESU’s concession stands.

Pictured here with Burgy is Marcia G. Welsh, Ph.D., president of East Stroudsburg University, who presented him with a retirement timepiece as a memento of his time at ESU.

Prior to his time at ESU, Dr. Barry served as the principal of Wind Gap Middle School in Wind Gap, Pa. from 2001-2012.

Dr. Puri’s academic career spans more than twenty five years of teaching, research and administrative accomplishments at major universities in the USA and abroad. He has been on the faculty of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Temple University, and Scranton University. He has also been a visiting professor of finance at Drexel University. Dr. Puri received his Ph.D. in Finance and MA in Economics from The University of Tennessee Knoxville, a master’s in Mechanical Engineering for Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India, and a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (Summa cum laude) from G.B. Pant University, India.

At the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Dr. Puri chaired for eight years the department of Accounting & Finance within an AACSB accredited college. Partnering with internal and external constituents, he assumed several important leadership roles to promote academic life. Working with the faculty, his focus has been to enhance global visibility of his college by creating enhanced educational opportunities for students with a purpose to develop and disseminate business knowledge focused on innovation, engagement, and impact. He has contributed to significant innovation in curriculum development that includes new degrees such as a one-year MBA, MS in Accounting, and two certificate programs. He helped develop an online MBA, an online International Business degree, and joint programs in MBA-Healthcare, and JD-MBA. As the College’s International Programs Executive, he took leadership role in developing international partnerships in various countries. He led the strategic planning of the college, an important measure in obtaining AACSB re-accreditation. He has chaired the Partnership, Outreach, and Engagement / Collaboration / Globalization Committee of the university’s strategic plan, and also chaired the Financial Resources Standard Committee for the university’s NEASC accreditation (New England Association of Schools and Colleges).

As a veteran teacher, Dr. Puri has developed and taught many undergraduate, MBA, and doctoral level finance courses at major universities. He also has supervised doctoral dissertations. Dr. Puri has contributed to the theory and practice of finance and his research papers are published in leading peer-reviewed journals of finance. His early work focuses on theoretical research in the areas of international asset pricing, foreign investment, and pricing of foreign exchange derivatives. One of his papers is now included in The International Library of Critical Writings in Financial Economics. His recent work continues with the advances in asset pricing, market efficiency in emerging markets, and market microstructure. He is the founding editor-in-chief of a finance journal and serves on editorial boards of three other journals. He has delivered key-note addresses and given invited talks.

Dr. Xia served as Director of the Library and Learning Resources Center for the State University of New York at Rockland prior to accepting a position with East Stroudsburg University. In his role, he articulated a strategic vision and served as advocate for the library within the college and larger community. He successfully secured several grants to support the development of library services and collections, including a renovation project to convert existing collection areas into multifunctional information commons for individual and group learning and study. Throughout his career, Dr. Xia also served as an associate professor in the School of Library and Information Science at Indiana University, a reference and instruction librarian at Rutgers University, and a digital projects librarian at the University of Florida.

In their new roles at East Stroudsburg University, each dean will provide leadership to their respective areas, creating opportunities for student learning, internships and career preparation and partnerships for faculty research while serving as a member of the university’s council of academic deans and the provost’s leadership team.
